Alastair McEwin is Australia’s current Disability Discrimination Commissioner. Mr McEwin commenced his Commissioner appointment in July 2016 after holding several senior roles in the disability and legal sectors, including the peak body for Community Legal Centres in New South Wales and People with Disability Australia where he was the Chief Executive Officer.
At the Parliamentary Friends for Eye Health and Vision Care dinner on 12 February, Mr McEwin's keynote address encouraged a shift away from theoretical discussions about diversity and inclusion, and instead asked for renewed focus on tangible actions and practical strategies employers need to implement in order to remove barriers for people with disabilities in the workplace.
