Government and ABC fail to deliver on accessible TV for Australia’s blind

Blind Citizens Australia, on behalf of people who are blind or vision impaired, has today lodged 21 complaints of disability discrimination with the Australian Human Rights Commission against the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) and the Federal Government for its failure to provide fully accessible content on Australian television. All complaints call for the Federal Government to commit ongoing funding to provide a minimum of 14 hours of audio described content per week. Read more →

Pre-election policy proposals

Integral to Vision 2020 Australia’s mission is to advocate for improved eye health and vision care for all Australians. With the announcement of the 14 September Australian federal election, Vision 2020 Australia is developing funding and policy proposals for consideration by the Australian Government and the Opposition. The first proposal finalised: Progressing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander eye health and vision care lists recommendations the sector would like to see adopted by both sides of politics. Parliamentary Friends for Eye Health and Vision Care breakfast

On 19 March, Vision 2020 Australia hosted a Parliamentary Friends Group for Eye Health and Vision Care breakfast at Parliament House, in Canberra. The event was a great success attracting over 95 guests–including 18 members of parliament from both sides of the house. Special guests included former Governor-General Major General Michael Jeffery AC AO (Mil) CVO MC (Retd) and Professor Emeritus Ron McCallum, Chair of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Let's talk about the NDIS

Work continues on ensuring low vision is represented in the proposed National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).The Low Vision and Rehabilitation Committee (LVRC) met on 5 September 2012 and endorsed the committee’s proposed Advocacy Platform and Action Plan. Guest speaker, Senator Mitch Fifield, Shadow Minister for Disabilities, Carers and the Voluntary Sector, commented on the Coalition’s intention, should it win government, to establish a Joint Parliamentary Committee to oversee implementation of the proposed NDIS. Members of the Low Vision and Rehabilitation Committee have written a letter to Senator Fifield supporting the concept of a Joint Parliamentary Committee. Read more →
